The Mochila Alegre (Happy Backpack) Program ensures nourishment to children in need over the 52 weekends of the year, enabling them to go back to school sound and healthy on Mondays, ready to learn.
What does it mean?
The Mochila Alegre (Happy Backpack) is an innovative program to provide food and food education to children of low income families when school canteens are closed - weekends and vacations.
Over 800 kids and youngsters of elementary and intermediate schools participate in the program.
This service is provided to children in need identified by school social workers. The program is a partnership with non profit organizations, churches and schools in 23 Municipalities.
Each Friday, volunteers load the backpacks with food for the weekend. It is a discrete approach to distribute food to kids.
All organizations participating in this program must be partners of Banco de Alimentos. They must:
Show a social risk profile of the families to benefit from the program.
Must be families with low incomes according to Family Department standards.
Children must be 3-12 years of age.
